Scirocco - a Sandsibs FST
plotbunny
caitlin_chan
Look, it's actually done and posted and stuff!

The hardest thing about this FST was finding music for Kankurou and Temari, since they aren't seething little balls of angst and rage like Gaara is/was.  XD  Hopefully I did an okay job!

Um, some minor spoilers for the timeskip and stuff, but nothing major or that hasn't been animated yet.

Gaara

1. Resident Evil Theme - Marilyn Manson (instrumental)

When I was trying to come up with an instrumental for Gaara, this is one of the first things that popped into my head.  I think it fits his pre-Naruto personality perfectly; it's kind of eerie.  It sounds unchained, I think, like Gaara's power and his mind.  It reminds me of when Gaara encountered Dosu on the roof that night during the Chuunin Exam and then, y'know, killed him dead. XD

2. Once Upon a Time - Smashing Pumpkins
Mother I'm tired
Come surrender my son
Time has ravaged on my soul
No plans to leave but still I go

Gaara and his plan to kill everyone except himself, spurred on by his mummy issues, among other things.  And here's me touching on the mummy issues....

3. Beauty is Within Us - Yoko Kanno, vocals by Scott Matthew
O mother dear
I curse you so
For breathing life into your wretched son
Why were you born at all?
O mother dear
I love you so
O please forgive this anger in my soul
Without you I'm alone

It's me who's been eternally damned
Trapped inside this cage, a ruined man
All damaged and depraved

I really don't think I need to say much here - the lyrics speak for themselves - but I will anyway.  XD  Gaara hates his mother even as he seems to love her, as he hates and loves himself.  Outwardly, he loves only himself, and will use whatever means he can (usually a well-placed Desert Coffin) to prove his existence.  Inwardly, in the very deepest parts of his mind, he hates who he is because it means that no one will ever love him.  This is the part Naruto manages to find with his words and his determination to protect his precious people.  If Gaara had truly loved himself to the extent that he claimed, Naruto would never have been able to change him.

4. The Desert is on Fire - Murder by Death
I'll leave a trail of fire across this desert
Just to see the desperation in your eyes
You think you've suffered well you ain't seen shit yet

Gaara views everyone around him as having suffered less than he has; he wants to kill the world to prove his existence.  Kankurou and Temari are charged with keeping him in line, even though he can easily kill them.

5. Hurt - Johnny Cash
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

Gaara is his own best - and only - friend.  Yashamaru, the person that he thought cared for him, ended up being a liar and tried to kill him, on Gaara's father's orders.  Gaara knew his father didn't like him, but the fact that his father wanted him dead was still a big shock at six years old.  These betrayals created the monster Gaara became.

6. Unknown Soldier - Breaking Benjamin
Borderline, dead inside,
I don't mind, falling to pieces
Count me in, violent, let's begin,
feeding the sickness
How do I, simplify, dislocate,
the enemies on the way

Show me what it's like,
to dream in black and white

Gaara is almost literally dead inside - he's repressed his emotional reactions to other people.  He's broken beyond most people's ability to repair, and is a sadistic, violent, and neurotic.  He wants to know real love, but can only understand his own twisted definition.

7. Shine - Imogen Heap
Shine - I will not cry and I will not die, no
Shine - I will be there for me
Shine - I'll be just fine if I stay all mine

This is all Gaara needs - or at least what he thinks is all he needs.  He believes he can depend only on himself, and that he is the only one who will ever be there for him, even though he's wrong.  His head is just too messed up to see how wrong he is without help.

8. Spinning - Zero 7
Was it loneliness that brought you here,
Broken and weak?
Was it tiredness that made you sleep?
Have you lost your will to speak?

The verses are how Naruto sees Gaara when they fight, and the chorus is Gaara when he finally begins to realise that real strength is.  Gaara thhought that his hatred made him strong, but he was really weaker than those he killed and threatened to kill.  His downfall was his failure to realise that people are at their strongest when they have someone that they need to protect.  Naruto was the one to finally teach him.

9. Living Inside the Shell - Yoko Kanno, vocals by Steve Conte
I hear a voice, hear a voice calling out to me
Look inside, see the light now ever holding you
All the truth is all you need to make of your reality, its right here
Look deep within your shell

Gaara's reformation song, pretty much to a T.  The hidden part of Gaara, the part of him that wants people to love him and to be able to love them back, heard what Naruto was trying to tell him.  After so many years, that hidden Gaara finds the strength to come out and face the world and accept things as they really are, instead of through the filter of his false, neurotic, existentialist world view.

Kankurou

10. The Firebird Suite - Stravinsky (instrumental)

This song is full of quick beats and flourishes and calls to mind Kankurou's precise control over his puppets and the way he makes them creep up from behind of replaces them with himself.  There are many layers to this piece, as Kankurou has many layers himself.  He's a cocky teenager, a skilled shinobi, the puppeteer pulling the strings and controlling what he can.

11. Façade - Jekyll & Hyde
You cannot tell, by lookin' at the surface,
What is lurkin' there beneath it!
See that face!
Now, I'm prepared to bet you,
What you see's not what you get -
'Cause man's a master of deceit!

On the surface Kankurou is arrogant and cocksure, almost a stereotypical teenage boy.  But what he shows to the world isn't all that he is.  He does have a certain amount of basis for his arrogance, though his overconfidence leads to his loss to/stalemate with Shino.  After Gaara's reformation, Kankurou becomes even more layered - we see in the flashback of chapter 249 of the manga (episode five of Shippuuden) that he has developed a fairly close relationship with Gaara (according to dialogue and facepaint, this is before Gaara becomes Kazekage, but it isn't clear whether or not this is before the Sasuke-in-a-Bucket arc).  He adds a layer of affection for Gaara that wasn't present before and isn't readily apparent by looking at him.  Also, the song mentions paint as a mask, so how could I not use it?  *is lame*

12. Master of Puppets - Metallica
Master of Puppets, I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream

Okay, I know this song is about drug and/or alcohol addictions and such, but I'm going more literal and less metaphorical here.  Also, I am a sad, sad panda and couldn't resist the urge to use a song called "Master of Puppets" for Kankurou.  Plus he's really, really hard to find music for.  <_<  So.  Yeah.  Literally, Kankurou is/becomes a master of puppets; after Shino, the only person we see him lose to is Sasori who, you know, built all of Kankurou's puppets and was the best puppeteer Sunagakure had ever seen ever except for that part where Chiyo kills him dead using his dead parent-puppets.  So I can't fault him there.  But yeah.  I think you all get why I picked this song, so I'll stop rambling now.

Temari

13. Moondance - Nightwish (instrumental)

No idea how to describe why this song makes me think of Temari, really, but I'll try.  It starts off all soft and pretty, like thinking "hey, wow, that blonde Suna kunoichi is really hot" and all of a sudden that Suna kunoichi that you noticed because she's hot is really strong and kicking your ass six ways from Sunday.  The song still keeps that thread of femininity even through all the bass and hard beats, though, like still noticing Temari's a girl as she's whooping you ass.  ...This is the best I can do, so I hope you kinda get it now.  XD

14. Perfect Enemy - t.A.T.u.
No more compassion
Not sentimental
I am now something
Experimental
You don't turn me off
I will never fail

We've seen Temari fight, and she gives no quarter.  When she beat Tenten, it was quick, efficient, and ruthless.  When she defeated Tayuya it was the same brutal efficiency she showed before, only this time she was with Konoha instead of against them.  When not in battle, she will show compassion - when Shikamaru's dad was ragging him out, she felt bad for him - but she's ruthless when it's required.

15. Walk the Walk - Poe
I wanna walk to the beat of my own drum
I wanna live to the beat of my own drum
I wanna take to the beat of my own drum
I wanna hang ten, high, say pleased to meet you

Give to the beat of my own drum
I wanna sing to the beat of my own drum

In the whole series, we've seen perhaps seven kunoichi from Sunagakure, including the during the Konoha invasion arc and  the anime filler arc featuring the Suna shinobi.  By comparison, Konoha has at least 17 named kunoichi, and a number of unnamed kunoichi drawn in as bystanders on the street behold the results of my obsessive amount of research into this because I'm odd and lame like that.  It would seem, based on numbers alone, that women in Suna generally chose other professions.  Temari doesn't strike me as the type of girl who would follow the trends and become anything she didn't want to.  She wanted to be a kunoichi, even though it doesn't seem like a common career choice for Suna women, so she became a kunoichi.  That's all there is to it, really.

The Sandsibs as a trio

16. Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins
Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
Ooh, the years burn

The first time we see the Sandsibs, Temari smiles and throws insults, Kankurou throws insults and grabs Konohamaru and gets ready to beat the crap out of him, and Gaara acts about as polite as Gaara ever gets.  Then scares Kankurou and Temari into behaving.  Naruto et al (minus Sasuke) are totally thrown for a loop.

17. Rise - Yoko Kanno, vocals by Origa
Save your tears
for the day
when our pain is far behind
on your feet
come with me
we are soldiers stand or die

They're trained to be soldiers, and letting their emotions get in the way of their mission is not an option.  If they fall down, they have no choice but to get back up and keep pressing forward.  There's no time for regrets or emotions on missions, only the calculations required to complete their goal.

18. Rootless Tree - Damien Rice [warning, explicit lyrics]
What I want from this
is learn to let go.
No, not of you
of all that is old
Killers re-invent and believe

Every time I hear this song, it seems more and more like it perfectly defines the Sandsibs and their relationship before and after Gaara's reformation.  Parts of the song are angry, like how Temari and Kankurou have very little love lost for Gaara before his reformation.  Other parts seem profoundly sad, such as the lines quoted here, and especially in the first line of the third chorus, the desperate "LOVE YOU" at the end.  One really has to listen to the whole song to get the feeling, though, I think.

BONUS TRACKS - songs that were chosen purely for the humour value

19. They're Coming to Take Me Away - Napoleon XIV
They're coming to take me away, ha ha
They're coming to take me away, ho ho hee hee ha ha
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time

I knew the minute I decided I wanted to do a Sandsibs FST that I would include this as a bonus track for Gaara (the other bonus I had right away was the trio bonus).  I don't think I really need to say anything else here.

20. I've Got No Strings - Pinocchio
I've got no strings
So I have fun
I'm not tied up to anyone
They've got strings
But you can see
There are no strings on me

Disney music.  Kankurou has puppets.  The puppets have [chakra] strings.  Kankurou has none.  That is all.  </lame>

21. Legs - ZZ Top
She's got legs, she knows how to use them.

Oh god, does Temari ever.  XDDD  In part one, she has the whole short-skirt thing going, and I don't know about you folks, but her legs are one of the first things I noticed.  <_<

22. Three is the Magic Number - Blind Melon
Every triangle has three corners
Every triangle has three sides
No more, no less
You don't have to guess
That is three, can't you see?
It's the magic number.

I heard this first way back in the days of Schoolhouse Rock, and it's a song I've been supremely fond of for years.  Really, this song could go for any group of three pretty much anywhere, but damnit, I couldn't not use it.  So here it is.  Three Sandsibs is the magic number of Sandsibs.  XDD  No more Mary-sue super secret hidden Sandsibs, please god.

And there you have it, my Sandsibs FST.  I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

I must send props to the following people, without which this mix would never have been completed: atom0001; cephiedvariable; guitarpulsation; rostand; tonko_ni; iamatwerp's wonderfully nerdy husband (who named this FST); Duncan; and everyone else that I rambled, ranted, fangirled, or flailed at during the course of making this FST.  XD

A ZIP file of all 22 songs, the front/back cover art, and the tracklist/descriptions (totalling 110MB) can be found HERE.  The ZIP is uploaded to MegaUpload - if that doesn't work for anyone, let me know.  Individual MP3s will uploaded upon request!

Please enjoy, and please comment if you download, so I can keep track of the amount of transfers and stuff.  Please.  ^^

I love it.

Sorry, but you're wrong about me owning the OST. I downloaded one of the tracks off LimeWire, and got the other two from a friend. ^^; It is a fantastic soundtrack, though.

UM YESS. <3

Will be downloading. I'm glad you threw some instrumentals in there, I can't wait to listen! Your comment/explanations are amazing.

...and yeahhh, what DOES the title mean?

<3 You're welcome. :DDDD

I was kinda disappointed I couldn't find an instrumental piece for the three of them, but at least I got one for each of them individually. ^.^

According to dictionary.com (because I'm lazy and copy-pasting is easy XD):
si·roc·co [suh-rok-oh]
–noun, plural -cos.

1. a hot, dry, dustladen wind blowing from northern Africa and affecting parts of southern Europe.
2. a warm, sultry south or southeast wind accompanied by rain, occurring in the same regions.
3. any hot, oppressive wind, esp. one in the warm sector of a cyclone.
Also, scirocco. [shuh-rok-oh, suh-]
[Origin: 1610–20; < It, var. of scirocco < Ar sharq east]

Ohh, good new vocabulary word, thanks! <3

No problem. :DD I'm happy to share. (It's a freaking awesome word; I like the "scirocco" spelling best, hence why I used that one.)

Snatched and downloaded without any shame. I'm a sucker for anything sand sibs related.
Love the title, btw. Very nice allusion.

I'm a total sucker for them, too, hence the FST. XDD

The title took me forever and ever and ever, and finally my friend's husband gave it to me.

Hope you enjoy! <3
